Joyce Alice Flathmann Bovey was born on February 25, 1946 in San Francisco to Ralph and Alice Flathmann. She entered her eternal rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior on February 16, 2026.
Joyce grew up and went to school in San Francisco graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School. She went away to college attending Sacramento State College where she met David Bovey in the fall of 1966. Dave and Joyce were married April 6, 1968 and Joyce graduate in June 1968 with a BA in History.
Joyce worked in the Sac State Library from September 1968 until June 1969 when they moved to Oxnard after Dave was hired by the Navy at Pt. Mugu, CA. Her first daughter Michele was born February 7, 1970. The family moved to Camarillo in February 1971. Her second daughter Nick (Nichole) was born June 19, 1971. Joyce was active as a volunteer in the local elementary school that the girls attended. Even while in Camarillo, the family made many camping trips to Lake Cachuma and Lake Casitas.
The family moved to California, Maryland in June, 1979 for Dave’s job. On the trip east, Joyce and the family visited the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Carlsbad Caverns, and numerous sites along the way and then spent 4th of July in Nashville. While in Maryland, Joyce and family had a chance to tour the entire east coast from Florida to Maine and visit many Civil War and Revolutionary War sites in Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The family returned to California in 1985 and settled in Simi Valley.
Joyce continued to travel with Dave to England, 2 trips to Alaska, 3 trips to Hawaii, a trip to Israel, and a river cruise from Amsterdam to Vienna. They visited Yellowstone and Glacier, the California coastal redwoods, Yosemite and Sequoia and many other places throughout the west. They traveled the entire west coast seeing all the sites from Seattle to San Diego. But her favorite spot was their cabin in Alpine County just south of Lake Tahoe. This was her relaxing spot. From the cabin they explored much of Northern Nevada where they found many herds of wild horses and even prong horned antelope. But sometimes she just enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the clouds slowly roll by.
Joyce was active in her church, Faith Lutheran Church in Moorpark where she was a member since 1998. She helped with the Living Nativity, organized and put on a Valentine dinner at the church, and participated in many other church activities. Joyce enjoyed machine embroidery and was a gifted seamstress who shared her creations generously. The church and her faith were large part of her life. She attended many Bible studies until her health began to fail.
Joyce is survived by her husband Dave of almost 58 years, her daughters Michele and Nick, her brother James Flathmann and his wife Lynn, many nieces and nephews, and many friends who knew her as a very kind person.
Services will be 1:00pm March 7 at Faith Lutheran Church in Moorpark, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity like Samaritan’s Purse, Boone NC.
