The following was sent at the beginning of summer before the study started:
The Revelation of John is described as an "apocalyptic" book. Apocalypse means "to reveal." This is a genre of literature that relies on imagery and symbolism to reveal God's will and work in the world. As John writes the Revelation, he will be speaking in imagery familiar to those who have spent time in the apocalyptic literature of the Old Testament. As you prepare to study the Revelation of John, it will be helpful for you to become familiar with the apocalyptic imagery found in the Old Testament. It will also prove helpful to be familiar with John's other writings. Here is a suggested reading schedule as you prepare for the fall:
* Read Ezekiel 1-19
* Read Ezekiel 20-39
* Read Ezekiel 40-48 & Daniel 1-10
* Read Daniel 11-12 & Zecheriah 1-14
* Read John 1-22 (also 1, 2, & 3 John if you have time)
Don’t feel too overwhelmed by this. Read two or three chapters a day to keep it manageable. The goal here is not for you to become an expert on these books or apocalyptic literature. I simply want you to become familiar with the patterns, images, and style found in apocalyptic literature. St. John will draw imagery from these books, so knowing what they say will be quite useful in our study. I would also encourage you to continue reading the Revelation as you study these other books.
